The Nuts and Bolts of Social Impact:

Perspectives from our Philanthropy Team

Philanthropy, at its core, is about people: their potential, resilience and drive to create change. By walking alongside them, we aim to make the unseen visible and anchor lasting trust, transformation and impact.

Foundations of Impact:
Examining the Role of Philanthropy

At The Majurity Trust, we recognise the importance of reflecting on our roles as funders within the ecosystem of change.

To us, philanthropy is more than a transaction; it’s a partnership that requires humility, intentionality and a willingness to learn.

As funders, we need to confront the realities of how our expectations shape the behaviour of the social sector. Traditional philanthropy tends to focus heavily on programmatic outputs but in doing so, are we inadvertently narrowing the depth of our impact? The numbers — persons affected, programmes initiated — are only part of the story. True impact lies in understanding how change occurs and what insights we gather along the way.

The term non-profit, typically associated with social impact organisations, defines only what these organisations are not: profit-driven. But how can we begin to comprehend the transformative potential of their work? Doing good is not one-size-fits-all. It manifests in countless ways and part of our role as funders is to listen deeply, pay attention to the details and adapt.

Taking an ecosystemic view is essential. Impact requires understanding the interconnected layers: the macro policies, meso dynamics of organisations and micro realities on the ground.

For example, in the mental health sector, bridging government and healthcare efforts with community-driven initiatives can illuminate gaps and amplify solutions.

Independent philanthropy plays a critical role in this ecosystem. Private capital enables us to take educated risks and spotlight issues that may fall outside the remit of public systems. This diversity strengthens the sector, creating richer, more agile ways to address complex societal challenges.

As is the case with social impact organisations, philanthropy thrives when funders share resources and learnings: the more we come together, the more we can do together.

Intentional change-making requires us to go beyond the buzzwords, to truly understand what they mean in practice. Collaboration, for instance, isn’t about checking boxes – it’s about fostering spaces where partnerships form naturally, driven by shared values and mutual buy-in. These are the connections formed in spaces like The Foundry that endure, enabling real, systemic change.

Ultimately, building impact is like constructing a solid foundation. Every screw, every bolt matters. Our work must be intentional, recognising that even small negligences can weaken the structure.

And just as any foundation requires input from skilled builders, we rely on the expertise and lived experiences of practitioners and partners to guide us. We deepen domain expertise to forge stronger connections, build more resilient organisations and generate transformational change for the sector by seeding innovative ways of being and doing.

The Majurity Trust is committed to driving this collaborative, intentional approach to philanthropy. Together, we can continue to elevate the aspirations of organisations working tirelessly to change lives on the ground, so that we thrive collectively.

Anchoring Change:
Unveiling the Heart of
Social Impact

Philanthropy often evokes grand visions of transformative change, yet much of its power lies in the unseen, day-to-day work that builds the scaffolds for social impact. At The Majurity Trust, our approach is rooted in being present — literally and figuratively — with the organisations we support.

This means stepping beyond metrics and immersing ourselves in the realities faced by grantee partners.

We hold regular catch-ups with organisations to uncover qualitative insights that help us spot patterns, gaps and opportunities.

Our weekends often see us attending workshops and events run by our partners, witnessing first-hand the work they do and how their beneficiaries engage with them. Whether it’s mental health programmes with students in schools or upskilling workshops with migrant domestic workers, these moments remind us of the depth and diversity of their impact. We approach this work with humility, acknowledging that our grantee partners are the true experts on the ground. Their lived experience and deep understanding of their communities constantly enrich our perspectives, underscoring how much we have to learn from them.

This approach shapes how we build our domain expertise and continues to clarify our intentionality.

Rather than relying on assumptions, we believe that effective support starts with listening, learning and adapting to meet the unique needs of organisations and communities.

Our team’s work spans more than just issues or programmes: it’s about strengthening the organisations that make this work possible. Some of the most critical funding needs are addressed through unrestricted organisational funding unlocked by our venture-building team, offering grantee partners the flexibility to grow sustainably.

By collaborating across our philanthropic pillars, we blend expertise in organisational development and cause-specific issues to build long-term resilience. Whether supporting caregivers or creating equitable learning opportunities, our focus is on empowering organisations to thrive amid evolving challenges.

Above all, our work is human-centered. Social impact cannot exist without the people behind it.

We engage with organisations as partners, prioritising trust and empathy in every interaction. This relational approach extends to beneficiaries on the ground and to the broader ecosystem of stakeholders, fostering a shared commitment to sustainable change.
